Lesson 6

Changing Strings

In this lesson I want to give all you aspiring guitarist some helpful advice on changing your strings.

First of all make sure your guitar is in tune before you start replacing strings, this will help you as you are adding the new strings in making sure they are tuned correctly from the start. Do not take all your strings off the guitar at once! By replacing the strings one by one it allows you to tune each string individually as well as giving you a guide for how to string the guitar properly (assuming it was strung properly to begin with). As you replace each string slightly stretch them until they stay in tune. This usually takes 4 to 5 stretches with tuning of the string in between each stretch. If you constantly break the same string then you may want to take some fine sandpaper (220), fold it and run it in the groove of the bridge saddle for the problem string. This should help. Anything serious and always take my guitar to a professional repairman.
